Veja nesta entrevista com Antonio Motta, Diretor Geral da Texas Instruments para a América do Sul, como o mercado mundial e nacional de semicondutores irá se comportar mediante a crise, no ano de 2009. - english version
The semiconductors market and the crisis
Take a look at this interview with Antonio Motta, General Manager of Texas Instruments for South America, about how the world and national semiconductors market will behave through the crisis in 2009.
The crisis that affects the whole world has already spread to numerous sectors, including the semiconductor one, where companies are facing a drop in 2009 revenue as a reality. However, the Brazilian market might not suffer such a drastic drop, like some other rising markets. As examples of some thriving markets in the country, General Manager of Texas Instruments for South America, Antonio Motta, lists the electronic energy meters segment, commercial automation and the general medical area.
‘It is believed that the market drop in Brazil will be smaller than in the US and Europe, and some segments might even show some growth this year’, he said during an interview to Saber Eletrônica Online.
The executive is aware of the situation of companies around the world and thinks that 2009 will not be an easy year. Motta even points out to a medium or long term reaction.
He also commented about the aspects of the national semiconductor sector and the performance of Texas in other countries.
*SE Online - * How should the world semiconductor market behave during 2009?
*Antonio Motta -* The latest projections from research institutes such as iSupply, WSTS and others indicate a significant drop in the semiconductors market for 2009, averaging over 10%. However, this world average varies from region to region, and in the Brazilian case the drop might not be so expressive, and in some markets we might even have some growth.
*SE Online - * When does Texas expects a reaction from the markets around the world?
*Antonio Motta -* There are no predictions on when the market should react. Generally, the consensus is that 2009 will be a difficult year without great possibilities of reactions on short term.
*SE Online - * And how is Brazil behaving?
*Antonio Motta -* Better than most markets in other regions in the world. It is believed that the market drop in Brazil will be smaller than in the US and Europe, and some segments might even show growth this year.
*SE Online - * Which segment has a better performance in Brazil, from what you have noticed?
*Antonio Motta -* Some segments are still showing relative growth, such as electronic energy meters, commercial automation and the general medical area. The auto industry, that has been the big villain since the end of last year, has a tendency to react starting this March; we are just not sure where it is going to be compared to 2008.
*SE Online - * The sophistication of project development in Brazil has been growing in the last few years. Is it due to the gradual replacement of importation of products assembled in Asia?
*Antonio Motta -* It is a fact that the project activity in Brazil has been growing in the last few years, although I don’t believe this only due to the replacement of products previously assembled in Asia. I believe that some market segments have found themselves with new project opportunities, such as the auto industry, through the spread of navigation and tracking systems, the commercial automation segment with new demand for fiscal printers, the medical segment with an emphasized demand for new locally designed equipment, etc. In some cases, it is true the assumption that the rising dollar has contributed to the decrease of importation of products from Asia and other markets and the subsequent replacement for locally produced equipment.
*SE Online - * How is the South Cone performance related to Brazil’s and what is our percentual participation on Texas sales to the region?
*Antonio Motta -* Although it has been growing these last few years, the South Cone sales still represent just a small portion of the total sales of Texas to South America. Brazil is still, by far, the largest market in the region.
*SE Online - * Are the sales performance of analog components and the digital line similar?
*Antonio Motta -* Taking into account the total of sales for the region, the revenue of digital products is still superior to the analog ones, specially due to the high volume of digital components used in the making of cellular devices. If we take into account only sales of local projects, sales of analog components are slightly superior to the one of digital components. However, the analog market turns out to be much more promising for the future, particularly for Texas. It is important to emphasize that Texas has just finished a new acquisition in the power analog components market, with the purchase of the company CICLON, a high performance and high frequency power MOSFETs manufacturer. This acquisition came to add up to other acquisitions on the Analog area done in the past by TI, such as Burr Brown, Unitrode and Power Trends.
